Common Haircap

Common Haircap (Polytrichum commune) is a species of moss commonly found in damp, shaded environments like forests, wetlands, and along riverbanks. This moss is recognizable by its upright, dense tufts that resemble small, green, hair-like structures, hence the name “Haircap.” It can grow up to 20 cm tall and has distinctive spore-producing structures called capsules, which are often covered by hair-like filaments. Common Haircap thrives in acidic, nutrient-poor soils and plays an important role in the ecosystem by helping to retain moisture and providing habitat for small invertebrates. It is also known for its ability to withstand harsh conditions, making it a resilient species in many ecosystems.
